If you have ever wondered what goes on in the depths of the ocean, our Sevierville attraction is designed to unveil the secrets of the deep blue sea. Along your journey at XPERIA: Ocean Journey, you will also learn some interesting things about some of the most fascinating sea creatures! Before your visit to our attraction, take a look at these 4 marine life facts that will blow your mind:
1. The Incredible Size of the Humpback Whale
It’s pretty common knowledge that whales are big animals, but exactly how large are they? Let’s look specifically at the humpback whale. The humpback whale is one of the largest animals on Earth, as they can grow to be longer than 50 feet and can weigh up to 40 tons! Interestingly enough, at their large size, humpback whales are not predatory. They filter feed for tiny krill or other small fish that are totally harmless to people. These amazing creatures are also known for their interesting mating style, as the males compose songs that they sing to attract females. When you visit our Sevierville attraction, you will have the chance to see a life-sized humpback whale in 3D!
2. The Tentacles of the Humboldt Squid
Another one of the fascinating creatures you will come across at XPERIA: Ocean Journey is the Humboldt squid. The most interesting of the marine life facts about this member of the Ommastrephid squid family is its physical characteristics. The Humboldt squid has a large mantle that takes up the majority of its body, but it also has 10 arms and tentacles that are used to help it survive. Among its tentacles, two of its arms are longer than the rest and are used for feeding. Each of its arms also has between 100 and 200 barb-like suckers that help them to grab, grip, and tear apart its food. When you visit us in Sevierville, you can watch giant battling Humboldt squids in action!
3. The Hunting Ability of Thresher Sharks
As is the case with most sharks, the thresher shark has incredible hunting skills. They are one of the most athletic species of sharks, and they use their huge tails and special jumping techniques to capture their prey. You can often find them feasting on schools of fish because they are great swimmers who can easily catch up to quicker fish. Once they chase down their prey, they will slap using their tail until the prey is disabled, and then the thresher shark can use its athleticism to finish the job. If you would like to see the speed of a thresher shark, be sure to visit our attraction when you vacation in the Smoky Mountains!
4. The Social Skills of the Sea Lion
In human terminology, the sea lion is what we would describe as the social butterfly. These playful creatures love to communicate, as you can often hear them making very interesting noises back and forth. They also typically travel in large colonies, which are broken down into smaller subgroups. It is not uncommon for sea lions to switch between different subgroups, which is why they get the reputation of being social. For your entertainment, we have an amazing exhibit at XPERIA: Ocean Journey where you can watch as life-like sea lions interact with you!
